What should I expect at my children’s dental exams?

If you have been a patient of Horizon Dental, you know that the dentists pride themselves on providing great patient care. You can rest assured that your children will be given excellent patient care as well. Your child’s Horizon Dental dentist will start the exam by asking you some questions about your child’s general health. He will want to make sure that there aren’t any special issues that may affect their teeth, and he will want to know about his or her eating, drinking and oral hygiene habits. He will ask if your child has any habits that may affect the teeth, such as pacifier use or thumb-sucking.

One of our doctors will examine your child’s mouth, including the lips and cheeks, the roof and floor of the mouth, and the tongue. He will examine the head, neck and jaw for any abnormalities. The dentist will want to evaluate how the teeth are coming in, and see how the upper and lower teeth will fit together. To help in this evaluation, he will take X-rays, which can help the dentist see how teeth are developing and if there will be enough space in the mouth to fit incoming teeth. X-rays can spot any decay that isn’t visible to the naked eye, like cavities that are in between teeth. The exam will also include a thorough cleaning of your child’s teeth. He may also recommend sealants or fluoride treatments.

In cases where children need extensive dental work or have an intolerable fear of the dentist, we do have patients who chose sedation for their children. Please ask about this service at the time of scheduling your appointment to see if this may be a solution for your child.

What are sealants?

Your child’s Horizon Dental general dentist wants to do everything possible to keep your child from experiencing tooth decay. Sealants are an easy and effective way to prevent cavities. Sealants are a liquid plastic that is “painted” onto teeth. They cover the pits and grooves that appear naturally in teeth and prevent food and debris from getting stuck in them. Sealants create a smooth surface on teeth, making them easy to clean.

How can I help to keep my children’s teeth clean?

At your appointment, your child’s dentist will go over the best way for your child to brush and care for his or her teeth. If your child seems to be having trouble taking care of their teeth, he will be able to offer you some tips for helping them. The most important thing you can do, when your child is first learning how to take care of their teeth, is to supervise them to make sure they are doing it right. And, you should demonstrate good oral hygiene habits by taking good care of your own teeth!
