What can I expect from a gum disease treatment?
To keep your gum disease from progressing from gingivitis to periodontitis, your dentist may recommend scaling and planning. Although these are technically two separate procedures, they are typically done at the same time by your Horizon Group dentist. Root planing cleans the surface of the tooth root and makes it smooth. A smooth tooth root means that bacteria can’t adhere to the root easily. Scaling is a thorough cleaning of tartar from the surface of your teeth and below the gum line. It also cleans out the bacteria and debris from the pockets that have formed. These pockets typically have a lot of tartar in them, which your dentist at one of our four locations will have to remove with special tools.
